Congregation Mikveh Israel

founded in 1740 and originally met in a small house on Sterling Alley (between Cherry and Race Streets, a block west of where the Betsy Ross house is now). The first synagogue was erected in 1782 on Cherry Street, between 3rd and 4th Streets, and its first Rabbi was Gershon Mendes Israel Seixas. It is known that Ben Franklin contributed to the building fund.
