Beth Emet The Free Synagogue

"The Free Synagogue" was inspired by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, a pioneer of Reform Judaism, who founded a synagogue in New York based on the principle of freedom of expression by the Rabbi and members of the congregation. In that same spirit, Beth Emet was founded in 1950 under the leadership of Rabbi David Polish. Rabbi Peter S. Knobel came to Beth Emet in 1980. His personal warmth, energy, and concern for every member sets the tone of a caring community. His scholarship, spiritual leadership, and commitment to Jewish traditions sustain and build upon Beth Emet's strength. He is a respected leader in the local and national Reform movement. Under his guidance, Beth Emet has grown in membership and in the range of its programs and services, and continued its national reputation.

We come to Fredericksburg with varied backgrounds and from a range of traditions. While we are a Reform temple, affiliated with the UAHC, members' backgrounds include classical and contemporary Reform, more traditional Conservative and Orthodox Judaism. Our membership includes both Jews by birth and those who have converted to Judaism. Our congregation also includes families of interfaith marriages. Our services continue on a year round schedule on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.
